Belkyra™

If you’re bothered by fullness under your chin — and, according to a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 67 per cent of people with it say they are — you may want to know about an innovative non-surgical treatment called Belkyra. This treatment (known as Kybella® in the U.S.) is the first and only Health Canada-approved injectable that reduces fat cells below the chin, resulting in a more contoured neck and jawline.

The active ingredient in Belkyra is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, which aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When Belkyra is injected in the area under the chin, a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells and aids in their absorption. Once the cells break down, the body gradually eliminates them and they are no longer able to accumulate in the area.

On the day of treatment, Dr. Hermant will apply a numbing cream on the target area for your comfort. At each session, she will administer a series of small injections into the area.

During a consultation prior to treatment, Dr. Hermant will determine if you’re a good candidate for Belkyra, and will develop a customized treatment plan for you.

FAQ

  • Once Belkyra destroys the fat under the chin, it should not return. Please note, however, that excessive weight gain after treatment may reverse the results.

  • Each treatment is about 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Patients often report a stinging sensation immediately after treatment. To help ease discomfort, Dr. Hermant will offer Extra Strength Tylenol® before and after the procedure.

  • Belkyra is appropriate for any adult bothered by their “double” chin who wants to avoid surgery and has not been able to reduce fat in the area through diet and exercise.

  • Avoid blood thinners, green tea, vitamin E and fish oils for a week prior. Three days prior, avoid using retinols and other active topicals, as well as hair-removal products and treatments. Don’t drink any alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment.

  • To prevent prolonged swelling, avoid alcohol, high-heat environments and strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours. Apply a cold compress several times a day for five days. Wear a high-protection broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.

  • There is swelling in the area for two to seven days or longer post treatment. Other side effects can include a numbing sensation, redness, bruising and discomfort, which are generally mild to moderate. For most people, downtime occurs most commonly after the first treatment and side effects decrease with subsequent Belkyra treatment sessions.

  • Many people see improvements in the treated area in two to four treatments.

  • Your appearance will gradually improve with each treatment session. Many patients will see results after two to four treatments, with sessions spaced out six weeks apart (to allow time for the fat to break down and dissolve). Some patients may require up to six treatments to achieve optimal results.
